Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common and sensitive issue faced by millions of men worldwide. Fortunately, there are several medications available to help address this concern, including Revatio and Viagra. In this blog post, we will delve into the differences and similarities between these two popular ED medications, and guide you on how to choose the right one for you through our convenient, personalized, and discreet services.

Revatio and Viagra: What’s the Connection?

Revatio and Viagra, both manufactured by Pfizer, share the same active ingredient – sildenafil citrate. This powerful compound works by relaxing smooth muscle cells lining blood vessels and improving blood flow in specific parts of the body, such as the penis and arteries in the lungs. While these medications may seem identical, they have some crucial differences that set them apart.

Differences Between Revatio and Viagra:

1. Indication:

While Viagra is approved for treatment of  erectile dysfunction, Revatio treats pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition that affects the blood vessels in the lungs. However, due to their shared active ingredient, sildenafil, Revatio is sometimes prescribed off-label for ED.

2. Dosage:

Revatio comes in a 20 mg tablet, while Viagra is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg doses. Although they share the same active ingredient, the dosage of sildenafil in each medication differs (3 times a day, whereas Viagra is taken as needed and should not be taken more than once per day). It is essential to follow the prescribed dosage to ensure the safety and efficacy of the drug.

3. Price:

Generally, Revatio is less expensive than Viagra. This price difference is mainly due to Revatio being available as a generic medication, while Viagra is still under patent protection in some countries (Vaigra is available as a generic medication in the US). Nonetheless, the cost may vary based on factors such as location, insurance coverage, and pharmacy.

Similarities Between Revatio and Viagra:

1. Mechanism of Action:

As mentioned earlier, both medications contain sildenafil citrate, which works to improve blood flow to the penis by relaxing the blood vessels. This shared mechanism of action is the main reason it is sometimes prescribed off-label for ED, but here are more details:

Viagra: In addition to human corpus cavernosum smooth muscle, PDE5 is also found in other tissues including platelets, vascular and visceral smooth muscle, and skeletal muscle, brain, heart, liver, kidney, lung, pancreas, prostate, bladder, testis, and seminal vesicle. The inhibition of PDE5 in some of these tissues by sildenafil may be the basis for the enhanced platelet antiaggregatory activity of NO observed in vitro, an inhibition of platelet thrombus formation in vivo and peripheral arterial-venous dilatation in vivo.

Revatio: In addition to pulmonary vascular smooth muscle and the corpus cavernosum, PDE5 is also found in other tissues including vascular and visceral smooth muscle and in platelets.

2. Side Effects:

Revatio and Viagra have similar side effects, which may include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion, and dizziness. Most side effects are mild and temporary, but if you experience any severe or persistent side effects, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider immediately.

Some serious but uncommon side effects include:

  • Sudden drop in blood pressure to potentially unsafe levels, especially when taken with certain other medicines
  • Priapism
  • Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes
  • Sudden hearing decrease or hearing loss
